The Orange Line acts as a metaphorical thread which traces its way through the cite and suburbs of Boston. This line services a diverse number of neighborhoods. This exhibition recognizes commonality through a shared use of the train line, the actual tone of orange, and the world of fibers. In “Connections” my black fiber highlights the rails while the orange circles signify the stops along the Orange Line. The contour stitching demonstrates that the impact of one stops intersects and impacts with other areas (stops). We are all connected and impacted by the actions and love of others. Connections is an ironic name for my work since I create fiber connections in all of my art using a wet felting process. I was honored to have this piece displayed at Galatea for their Let There Be light show. It is truly unbelievable that I am raising daughters and granddaughters in 2023 that do not have control over their own bodies. I’ve created this Roe game jersey to represent that this battle was won over 50 years ago, yet the game goes on. I used an off white fiber to demonstrate a vintage feel as we step back in time and vintage thinking with the overturning of Roe v. Wade. The Roe jersey hangs on a female bust sculptured from wire because the women are carrying the weight of this issue. So it just seems natural that I’ve combined these two passions in my felting artwork. Felting is the process of creating items out of sheep’s wool using a variety of processes. I use sheep’s wool in everything I create and have established lasting relationships with the dedicated farmers who provide me with various types of wool. I have created pieces that address the overturning of the Roe V.
